#24 THE HOBBY

Daily Debriefing A good story must have a focus – The Point, in addition to A Beginning, A Middle and An End; story telling basics. I have found over the years, that the more I do this, the less inclined I am to sit down and write the actual story. If I know the details and the ending already I get bored – so terribly bored – and fail to see the point in finishing. It is anathema to just about everything I have been taught about writing over the years from many and varied sources, but the fact is – it just doesn’t work for me. Most of the time, at least.

Many writers pre-plan plots, often for hours, days or weeks, sometimes even months in advance of writing them. Though I do find this a practical approach, at times even useful, I also find it boring and predictable. I despise predictability and in knowing the story I am about to compose I am bored with it even before I begin to write it.

Spontaneity and imagination are two of the three things I cherish most as a writer. The third, which in fact is the first – are my Muses. All nine of them! I depend upon them absolutely and often sit with fingers poised awaiting inspiration… An image pops in – and I am away, the story unfolds itself…

‘The Hobby’ was a sheer delight to write and is a fun little Telling Tale, 3064 words in length which features nine naughty little muses, a french maid, a Lord and bored little lady in search of a satisfying hobby.

You will, as ever, have to wait until it is published before you may read this Telling Tale, but when it is…

Enjoy!
